30 Day Creativity Challenge
Watercolor Painting of Cox Beach Lookout in Progress
It’s no secret that I’ve been in a creative rut lately. I don’t know if it’s burnout, 45 year old brain fog, or too much time scrolling on my phone that’s causing it, but it’s likely a combination of all three.
To combat this funk I’m giving myself a 30 day challenge!
From Monday to Friday I’m challenging myself to:
Paint for at least 30 mins, even if it’s terrible. I don’t have to finish a painting each day, but I do have to show up. The hope is that I’ll end up spending much more time than just 30 mins in creation once I get started, and maybe I’ll work through some ideas I’ve been procrastinating for quite awhile.
Walk for at least 30 mins a day. There’s literally no excuse for this one. Time in nature always fuels my creativity and invigorates my soul. Lately I've been walking with my youngest son as he rides his bike to the park.
Practice a new creative hobby for at least 15 mins a day. I’ve recently started learning the guitar (shhh, I’m not really telling anyone this yet) and I’m at the point where I’m so terrible, but kind of obsessed with getting better. It’s exciting! When you turn your creative hobby into a business, it can often lead to no longer having any hobbies so I'm excited to do something that I have no desire to monetize. I’m also excited for the upcoming gardening season. I can't wait to get some seeds in the soil and watch them sprout.
Daily journaling practice - even if it’s just a few words. This one is new for me. I used to keep a journal as a teenager into my early twenties but it was more about what happened each day. For this journal I’m looking more for a place to document my thoughts, feelings and ideas, especially as they relate to my work.
The last thing I'll be doing each day is reading! If you know me, this is actually a big deal. I've never really been a reader, so realistically, I'll be listening. I'm looking for books that really inspire creativity. The first one I'll start with is called “We Need Your Art” by Amie McNee.
I’m excited for this 30 day challenge. I know it will be just the medicine I need to refresh my creative practice and more importantly my mind.
If you’re feeling pulled to do the same, I’d love to invite you to join me. I’m going to share my daily progress on Instagram to keep me accountable and I’d love to hear how it improves your life.
My hope for this 30 Day Creative Challenge is to spend less time on my phone. Instagram has felt very high maintenance lately and I'm enjoying connecting through email more often. Please join me through my newsletter here.
